:bulletblack: Character
Landkreuzer IS, or Zuse as those at Ironstone have come to call him, is slightly taller and more "outgoing" than your average Hanoverian. He's quite the handful both in hand and under saddle. He seems to think that he is king of the world at times and that his handlers and riders are his minions. If he wants something, he'll either try to get it himself or he will nip and bite in order to get someone's attention. It is unwise to lead him without a chain, as he is known to break away from his handlers if they are not paying attention. When it comes down to it, he's a giant love bug. He just likes to have everyone's attention. Give him that and his demeanor will seem to "calm". He's the "all eyes on me" sort. He has a ton of energy, but it comes in short bursts which, in combination with his lean frame, is what makes him the perfect show jumping and puissance competitor. Speed and scope over stamina with this boy. He is both extremely fast, brave, and clean on course, lifting his knees to his chin and kicking his hind legs to clear the jump with room to spare. If his rider isn't paying complete attention or even loses connection for even a second, Zuse will take that as his cue to take charge. He needs both a strong and confident rider as he will take advantage of one who is not. They will likely end up flat on their back on the ground. His gaits are full of movement and elasticity, yet he is easy for his rider to sit if they know what they are doing.

:bulletblack: Story
Landkreuzer was born on a rainy, frigid Spring night. It was odd weather for the time of year in Texas, that was for sure. Kat had spent the past few weeks keeping an eye on her old mare, Priceless. The two had been together since the very beginning and it was about time that she had gotten a foal out of the 15 year old mare. Many people had advised against breeding her, as she was older and "past her prime", but the vet, Dr. Ian Lauper, had declared the mare in excellent shape. She shouldn't have any problems carrying and delivering the foal. Dr. Lauper was right, Jaz had no problems carrying the foal to term, but now she was over two weeks past her due date. Now day 373, Kat and Dr. Lauper were expecting the foal to pop out at any time. Jaz was showing signs of being ready to foal, but there was no foal.

Kat had fallen asleep to the sound of the muffled rain drumming on the roof. Some unknown hours later, she woke to Dr. Lauper shaking her shoulder. "It's coming." He said in the darkness of the bunk room. She blinked the sleep away as she tried to focus of the older man's face. He had been their vet for as long as she could remember. Her parents had trusted him, and so did she. Stretching and sitting up in the recliner, she glanced at the clock on the wall as Dr. Lauper stepped out of the bunk room and shut the door behind him. Just past 3am. She sighed as she grabbed her jacket and slipped it on, then stood. Turning her attention to the screens on the far wall, she focused on the only one that was lit. Jaz was the only mare to be bred this year, and part of Kat was glad. Sometimes she hated these early morning births, and this one was especially stressful. This was her mare she was watching. The mare that she had raised and trained. And it was the first birth without her parents around. She walked over to the screen and sure enough, the placental sac had broken and the mare had laid down in the middle of her stall. Kat moved away from the screen and towards the door. She fumbled as she slipped her sneakers on, then exited the room.

Leaving the heated room and walking into the cold Spring air made Kat wrap her jacket around her as tight as she could. Stuffing her hands into her jacket pockets, she walked over to stand next to the vet, glad that they decided to have the mare foal indoors instead of out in the pasture where it would be much colder. And wet. "How's she doing, Ian?" Kat asked as she stepped up to the stall front, gazing at her mare through the dim light. "She's progressing slowly. Not too slowly, however." He replied quietly. Kat just 'hmmm'ed and continued to watch. So far, the only part of the foal that could be seen was a tan front hoof. "A sock!" Kat thought excitedly. She had always loved horses with socks. For the next half hour, Kat would stand and watch, pace the barn aisle, repeat. Walking up the the stall again, she noticed that both legs were fully out and about half of the head was as well. "Two socks and a snip!" The foal had a snip that covered the front portion of its lip, cut through the center of each nostril, and sharpened to a point about halfway up the foal's face, right where the rest of it disappeared inside the mare's vulva. Another half hour later, the foal's head was nearly all the way out. "Two socks, a snip, and a star." Kat was in love with the foal already, but the time this birth was taking was making her nervous. That was exact when Dr. Lauper chose to speak up, making Kat jump. "She's having too much difficulty," he said. "the foal should have been out already." He had already put gloves on, grabbed a towel, and was quietly sliding the stall door open. Kat watched as he stepped in, softly talking to her mare. Jaz noticed him, but didn't care that he had walked up behind her. Using the towel, he grasped the foal's feet and pulled gently as the mare pushed. After a couple of those, the foal was out to the shoulders. Dr. Lauper took a pair of scissors out of his back pocket and cut the filmy white sac that encased the foal and peeled it away. After that was done, he continued helping deliver the foal.

What seemed like hours later to Kat, the foal was finally delivered. Dr. Lauper had cleaned the foal's nasal passages to help it breathe easier, soaked the umbilical cord, and determined that the foal was in fact a colt. "A colt, how exciting!" Kat exclaimed, trying to keep her voice down. She watched with wide eyes as her mare moved to sniff at her foal who had already begun to wriggle his long, slender legs and observe his surroundings with great interest. Only moments old and he already had so much energy! He had a large snip, a small star right in the middle of his forehead, and four perfect socks. Dr. Lauper stepped out of the stall and disposed of his gloves before returning to stand next to Kat. "It all makes sense now." he said. Kat looked at him, raising one eyebrow. "I would be surprised if she didn't have a hard time with this foal. The colt is huge, you've got one big baby to deal with!" Kat and her dear old friend looked at each other for a moment before turning their gazes forward again, laughing quietly as they watched the colt stand on wobbly legs and try to nurse for the first time.
